Tell me about your career with AccountAbility?

I actually joined Ambition in the UK in 2013 when I helped my Manager establish and grow the Business Support Team within the Legal sector. I was there for 18 months before moving to Sydney, which is something that I had wanted to do for a long time. The fact that Ambition is headquartered here was a big draw for me joining the company in the first place.

When I made the move in 2015, Ambition was able to support me and I got my position in the Business Support team which is what I knew. I’ve been enjoying the Australian lifestyle ever since!

What would you say are the main differences between working in the UK and Australia?

I think there are few differences as a recruiter, mainly because the GFC didn’t hit as hard in Australia. In London, for example, there’s a professional courtesy around candidates looking for a job and clients giving you a role and the lines of communication. I think everybody feels grateful to have a job!

Whereas in Sydney, people don’t necessarily have the ‘fear’ that comes with not having as many job opportunities. Because of that, people tend to move around a lot more, so it’s especially important to understand exactly what they want from their career.

Outside of work, obviously the beaches are incredible and because there’s such a big expat community, your friends become your family and there are a lot more social events!

It’s been a good year for you with two top-performing quarters and a promotion. Is there anything you can attribute this to?

I think it’s been a mixture of putting a lot of hard work in and building up my brand and credibility. There’s been a change in our team structure too which has streamlined our focus within certain industries and allowed us to set specific goals, which is a good way to work for me.

What’s your favourite part of your role?

I like being a specialist and having the experience and knowledge now where I can give people advice and support. Helping others is definitely the best part of the job for me.

What are you looking forward to in the future?

We are so busy at the moment that the possibilities of what I can get excited at are endless! But I’m definitely looking forward to building the desk out further and bringing new people into the team who I can help be successful in line with the business.

What’s the one piece of advice you would give?

“You can’t avoid the hard work, so put it in, be persistent and you will succeed.”
